Lighthouse of Hope

A favorite childhood memory is the beautiful lighthouse on Anastasia Island where I grew up in St. Augustine, Florida. I heard the stories of how the lighthouse gave light, signals, and direction to ships struggling through the rough stormy seas in the Atlantic Ocean. How often did this lighthouse save a ship from destruction? I thought. What a wonderful guiding light for the sailors to use for their safe return to shore.

Hannah found her guiding light during the storm in her life as she turned to God in her time of need. (I Samuel 1) She was childless. She was desperate. She was ridiculed and felt unworthy and ashamed.

She went to the temple to pray and ask God if He would give her a child, and then she vowed to give him back to God for His service. God blessed her barren womb and she bore a son, Samuel. When he was weaned Hannah kept her promise and returned her son to the temple so that Samuel could be used by God. Hannah had found the guiding light in her personal storm. God used her child, Samuel, as a great prophet to lead Israel and to anoint future kings.

We, too, can find guidance from the light of the Lord through the storms of our lives.
